“After India released water into the rivers, the flood situation in Punjab’s Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab has taken a dangerous turn. To protect the irrigation infrastructure, the Head Qadirabad barrage on the Chenab was blown up.”
“Following India’s water aggression, flooding in Punjab’s streams and rivers has submerged hundreds of acres of land. In Kotli Bawa Faqir Chen village of Pasrur, the overflowing Dek stream has wiped out the local graveyard and caused severe damage to ready-to-harvest rice crops. India has also issued fresh flood warnings, with the Indian High Commission formally alerting authorities. According to reports, a flood surge may enter the Sutlej from Ferozepur, while the Ravi is expected to receive a surge from Madhopur, and the Chenab from Akhnoor.”
“A high-level flood is expected in all three rivers. Acting on the Indian alert, the Indus Water Commission has issued a flood warning.”
“The army has been called in for relief operations in Hafizabad district due to the worsening flood situation, making it the eighth district in Punjab where troops have been deployed at the request of local administrations. So far, the army has been summoned to assist in Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, Okara, Sargodha, and now Hafizabad.”
“Briefing on the flood situation, Punjab PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said the next 48 hours are extremely critical for the Ravi and Chenab rivers, though the current spell of rains is ending and relatively lighter showers are forecast in the coming days. He confirmed that the Head Marala structure remains safe, with the flood surge moving downstream through the Khanki Headworks and expected to reach Panjnad without causing major damage. According to him, water flow at Jassar on the Ravi has been recorded at 210,000 cusecs, which will pass nearby areas between 9 and 10 tonight. At Shahdara Barrage near Lahore, which has a capacity of 250,000 cusecs, around 180,000 to 190,000 cusecs of water is expected to flow through.”
“Irfan Kathia reported that the water flow in the Sutlej at Ganda Singh has surged to 245,000 cusecs but is expected to recede in the coming hours. In the Chenab, however, the level has risen sharply to 902,000 cusecs, submerging 128 villages and forcing the deployment of army units across seven districts. High-level floods have also been recorded in the Dek and Basantar streams, though authorities say drainage measures are underway. The DG PDMA added that Rs. 900 million has been released for the affected districts, with food and medicines already supplied to relief camps. He noted that residents were given timely high alerts, and so far, no large-scale loss of life has been reported.”
